It seems as though a new obstacle race is popping up every day. Some are longer than others and have more obstacles, but for the most part, all of them share the same qualities: distance, mud, crawling, climbing, jumping, bumping… and of course some have elements such as extreme heat, extreme cold, barbed wire, fire and electrical shock.
You know, the sorts of things that give the BAM! to kick up a typical running event just a notch.
I was just made aware of a new event coming to my neck of the woods. It’s called the Rugged Maniac and it looks like a nice trade-off for a day at the beach this summer. Well, I guess it’s a nice trade-off if your just a little bit crazy… or just like a good military obstacle type challenge.
We had a lot of fun this past November when we ran the Tough Mudder. And one of the things that I kept wondering was how I’d fair in the Mudder if you took out the freezing temperatures and replaced it with the summer heat.
Looks like I’ll get my chance to find out. While the Rugged Maniac is only a 5k, for all intents and purposes it’s the Tough Mudder. Same physical location and trade-off obstacles. Similar T-Shit, beer and rock party for the finishers. And just like the Mudder, the event is really geared toward testing your mental toughness. The change in elements will give me a nice contrast in evaluating how they play into performance of such an event.
Needless to say, I’m looking forward to it.
With good weather right around the corner, we’re getting ready to roll out our Fully Functional Boot Camp sessions. In light of the Rugged Maniac, we’re thinking of adding in a 6-8 week Rugged Maniac Training Prep Course for those who would love to tackle the event but are hesitant. Anyone who’s interested, drop a comment below, shoot me an email or hit us up on the Facebook page and we’ll get your squared away.
Should be a lot of mud-slinging fun!

Interested in locating some local training in the Boston Metro area.
Can you give me some advice?
Thanks
Stevan,
I’ll have to talk to some of my colleagues in your area and find out if anyone is running any specific training for the event.
For the time being, you can take a look at some of my Tough Mudder posts here on the site. Since the events share many similarities, you can use some of the tips to get your training started.
What does your current training program look like?
That sounds a lot more fun than a day at the beach
Seriously John, you’re going to need to start a site just for this type of training.

J-Siff,
Yeah, I can’t lay out on the beach for more than 30 minutes without getting antsy, anyway. So, why not go crazy!
“you’re going to need to start a site just for this type of training”
Funny you should mention that, my friend
haha, I should’ve known…
Sounds awesome!
Better than spending my day at the gym that’s for sure.
